Terms from A to Z
How the glossary is organised
The entries are in alphabetical order of the German interface, so that both languages share one structure; the English heading comes first, the German term follows where it differs. Labels from the interface are in bold, names from the demo workspace "Nordwind" in quotation marks, rights as code. Where two terms belong together, such as owner and moderator, they share one entry. If you want to know what changed recently, see the release notes.
From A to F
The first entries range from co-determination to the home page.
Request (Antrag)
A request is created when someone in a workspace with co-determination switched on wants to change something listed under Rights subject to co-determination, for example a right in a role. The request goes to the committee, carries a deadline and can be approved, rejected, queried or withdrawn. Until the decision, the old state applies. At Nordwind a request by Robert Lang is pending that would give heads of department a view of all skills. More under Codetermination.
Fallback (Auffang)
The fallback is the person named under Organisation to whom everyone without a manager is assigned. It is chosen explicitly and never derived from an admin role; without a Fallback person the fallback stays off and those people remain open cases. In full under Organisation: reporting line and fallback.
Join rule (Beitrittsregel)
The join rule sits under Users as Who gets in and only applies to domain workspaces. Open means: whoever signs in with an address of the company domain is a member automatically. Closed means: nobody joins on their own; only people an admin invites, imports or brings in from Entra ID get in. More under Domain joining and the join rule.
Confirmation (Bestätigung)
A confirmation is feedback someone gives on a skill in a person's profile card. Under Feedback the workspace decides what is confirmed: that a skill is present, or individual levels. The person sees how many others confirm a skill, and the setting Who sees your confirmations governs the readers. More under Feedback.
Works council (role)
Works council is the role that is created when co-determination is switched on and that the committee members hold. It allows seeing and deciding requests without reading personal data such as skills or levels. The name of the body itself, such as "Betriebsrat" or "Personalrat", is set by the workspace under Codetermination. At Nordwind, Paul Weber and Sarah Winter sit on the committee. More under Rights: codetermination.
Rating (Bewerten)
Rating means setting your own level for a skill, from 1 to 5 or Cannot do. You do that in the list under My Skills, on the skill page and on the home page in the card stack Rate a skill, where a tap on a number saves at once. The level is a self-assessment that only the person changes. In full under My Skills and rating.
Library (Bibliothek)
The Library is the catalogue of all skills and skills profiles you may see: public content and the private content of all workspaces where you are an active member. It has a grid, search, filters and pages; a filter by origin shows one workspace only. More under The library.
CSV import
With the CSV import an admin brings in a list of people at once under Users. Afterwards the people appear as Prepared in the directory until they are activated, and the user list shows the source CSV import. At Nordwind, Paul Weber, Lena Berg and Nina Roth came in this way. More under Import a list (CSV).
Entra ID
Microsoft Entra ID is the directory that, on Business and Enterprise, can decide who is in the workspace. The connection sits under Integrations; Skillties reads name, email and optionally picture, manager, position and department, and never writes back. Whoever is disabled or deleted in Entra loses access here too. More under Entra ID.
Entra group
An Entra group is a group from the Microsoft directory that the workspace selects under Integrations. It can provide members, be mirrored as a Skillties group, or both; a mirrored group gets its people from Entra and can carry roles like any other group. More under Groups as distributors.
Favorites (Favoriten)
Favorites are skills, skills profiles and people you keep at hand; they sit in the sidebar and can be sorted into folders. A star on the content sets or removes the favorite. At Nordwind, Robert Lang has marked "Mitarbeiterführung", "KI im Arbeitsalltag" and the profile "Führungskraft". More under Favourites, search and switching workspaces.
Feedback
Feedback is the app in which others assess your skills. The workspace switches on the ways: Direct request, Everyone assesses everyone, Peers or Manager feedback. The app's tabs show what you received, what is open, what you gave and who your peers are. More under Feedback and App settings: Feedback.
Feedback round
A feedback round is a request about specific skills to a fixed circle of people with a deadline. What was shown to those asked at the start applies to this round, even if the workspace changes its rules later. The person asking only learns at the end who answered. More under Feedback.
Manager feedback
With Manager feedback, managers assess their team. This way needs a reporting line under Organisation and stands alone: if it is on, the collegial ways are off. More under Rights: feedback.
For you (Für dich)
For you is the list on the home page that replaces the bell. Tasks with their one action come first, then requests with accept and decline, then news with Open or Reply. A selector next to it decides whether you see all workspaces, one of them or public content only; the Volume per conversation governs what arrives there. More under Home and "For you".
From G to M
Here are groups, roles and the terms around profile and match.
Mapped (Gemappt)
Mapped is what Skillties calls the skills of a profile for which you have set a level, for example "7 / 10". The number appears on cards, in the header of a skills profile and on the home page next to the match. What is not mapped counts as 0 in the match. More under Skill cards and metrics.
Committee (Gremium)
The committee is the group of people who decide requests in co-determination. The workspace names it under Codetermination, members are proposed and confirm their seat; the Name of the body appears in requests and notifications. More under App settings: Codetermination.
Group (Gruppe)
A group is a distributor for roles: it carries roles and passes them on to all its members, nothing more. A group without a role is a list without effect. Members come by hand or from an Entra group. At Nordwind the group "Führungskräfte" carries the role "Bereichsleitung". More under Groups as distributors.
Main profile, secondary profile and target profile
When you enrol in a skills profile you choose the type. The Main profile is your role, and there is one per workspace; a Secondary profile is a further role you fill; a Target profile is one you are working towards. The type appears as Main, Secondary or Target in the plaque and sets the colour. More under Skill and profile pages.
Help window
Help & Support in the account menu or at the bottom of the workspace settings opens the help as a window inside the app: narrow at the right edge or large across the content area, on the phone as a sheet from below. The window remembers its size and the article you last read. Outside the app the help is its own page.
Level
The level is the degree to which someone masters a skill, from 1 to 5; Cannot do is level 0. Your own level is a self-assessment. A skills profile names a target per skill, and the distance between the two appears in the list as Gap. More under My Skills and rating.
Reporting line (Linie)
The reporting line says who is whose manager. It is maintained under Organisation or comes from Entra ID, and it governs which skills and levels a manager may see. At Nordwind, Max Wagner leads production and Tom Brooks the "Frühschicht Bremen". More under Organisation: reporting line and fallback.
Deletion rules (Löschregeln)
The deletion rules under Users define how long a deleted membership stays restorable, who takes over the skills and profiles of a person who left, and who decides that. They apply in the workspace where a piece of content was created. More under Deletion rules and retention.
Match
The match, called Match Level in the interface, says in percent how well your levels fit the targets of a skills profile. Every skill counts with the share your level reaches of the target, at most in full; unmapped skills count 0. The match appears on cards, in the profile header and on the home page. More under Skill cards and metrics.
My Skills (Meine Skills)
My Skills is the list of all skills from your profiles across all workspaces, with your level, the target and the gap. It can be ordered by status or by profile and is the place where you rate what is still open. More under My Skills and rating.
Codetermination (Mitbestimmung)
Codetermination is the app for Enterprise workspaces in which a committee decides on defined changes. It is switched on under Codetermination in the settings, where the committee, the deadline and the rights subject to co-determination are set. Approval is never implicit: only what runs there as a request needs a decision. More under Codetermination.
Membership (Mitgliedschaft)
The membership is your belonging to a workspace and has a stage: Active, Prepared (created, no access yet), Invited, Not joined, Disabled (no access, data stays), Deleted (restorable until the cut-off date) and Permanently deleted (only name and period remain). Under Users, Stage filters the list accordingly. At Nordwind, Daniel Stein is disabled, Mia Lorenz deleted, Felix Grant permanently deleted. More under The stages of a membership.
From N to S
From inheritance via the plans to the Skills Hub.
Catching up (inheritance)
If a profile follows a template, it shows above its skills list when there are changes to catch up on: after a pause, on a line without automatic adoption, or after a failed hand-down. Whoever may edit the profile adopts the changes or declines them; nothing happens automatically. More under Inheritance.
Organisation
Organisation is the settings area for reporting lines: here admins assign people to a manager, several at once if needed, and name the fallback. Changes are saved or discarded together. More under Organisation: reporting line and fallback.
Owner and moderator
Every skill and every skills profile has an owner who is responsible for the content, invites moderators and decides about deletion. Moderators help edit but invite nobody and do not delete. Both appear on the detail page under Owner & moderators. If the owner leaves the workspace, the deletion rules apply. More under Who takes over your skills and profiles.
Peers
Peers are people who connect by invitation and consent and from then on give each other feedback with names at any time, without a request. The workspace recommends a minimum and maximum number, and the home page shows your circle under My peers. More under Feedback.
Personal (Persönlich)
Personal is the area outside every workspace: content and enrolments here belong to you alone. In the workspace switcher it sits next to your workspaces, and on the home page a separate group collects what belongs to no company. More under The personal area.
Plaque (Plakette)
The plaque is the two-part marker on skills and skills profiles. On the left is the origin: lock and workspace name for private content, globe and Public for public content. On the right is what the content has to do with you: Main, Secondary or Target with the workspace of your enrolment. If the right field is missing, the content does not concern you. More under Skill cards and metrics.
Plan
Every workspace has a plan: Free, Business or Enterprise. The plan appears in the workspace switcher below the name and decides which apps and settings areas exist; codetermination belongs to Enterprise only. "Nordwind" is Enterprise, "Boreal" Business, "Polar" Free. More under How a right takes effect: plan, switch, right.
Private and public
When creating content you choose its visibility. Private means: the content belongs to one workspace, and only its members see it. Public means: everyone in Skillties finds it, and when the owner leaves, the workspace where it was created takes over its upkeep. On cards the name of the workspace stands in place of "Private". More under Who sees what.
Right (Recht)
A right is a single permission inside a role, for example settings.members for the area Users or directory.view for People. Rights only take effect if plan and app switch allow them. Under Roles & rights, Why is this allowed? shows per person where a right comes from. More under How a right takes effect: plan, switch, right.
Role (Rolle)
A role bundles rights and is assigned to people directly or via groups. The system roles Workspace admin and Member always exist; People development is a template, Works council is created with co-determination. At Nordwind, Ben Carter holds the role "IT-Administration". More under The role model.
Skill
A skill is a single, reusable capability with name and description, such as "CNC-Programmierung" or "Change Management". Skills sit in profiles with a target, people rate themselves on them, and every skill has an owner. More under Skill and profile pages.
Skills Hub
The Skills Hub is the workspace's workbench across people, skills, profiles, Assignments and teams: tables with views, filters, matrix and export. Which features it offers is set by the workspace under Skills Hub; who may open it is governed by a role. More under Skills Hub.
Skills profile (Skills-Profil)
A skills profile describes a role as a list of skills, each with a target, such as "Schichtleitung Produktion" or "Data Analyst". People enrol as main, secondary or target profile and see their match. Profiles can be private or public and can inherit from a template. More under Create and assign a Skills Profile.
Targets & gaps (Soll & Lücken)
Targets & gaps is the feature of the Teams app with which a team defines which skills it needs at which level and sees where it falls short. The workspace switches it on under Teams. The "Frühschicht Bremen" has a target for Lean Production, Arbeitssicherheit and CNC-Programmierung. More under Teams.
From T to Z
Finally teams, handover, inheritance and the terms around workspace and access.
Team
A team is a unit of work in the Teams app, either a Line that is permanent or a Project that is time-boxed with an end date. A team never carries rights; membership appears in the profile card. At Nordwind, "Frühschicht Bremen" is a line and "Einführung SAP S/4HANA" a project. More under Teams.
Handover (Übergabe)
A handover passes the owner role for a skill or skills profile to another person. The previous owner remains owner until the other person accepts within 14 days; without acceptance everything stays as it is. At Nordwind, Ben Carter is currently offering Clara Bell the skill "Power BI". More under Accept a handover.
Inheritance (Vererbung)
With inheritance a skills profile follows a template: the skills come from the template, the level is adopted once and then belongs to the derived profile. The profile page shows Inherits from and the list of Derived profiles; End inheritance dissolves the line. At Nordwind, "Schichtleitung Montage" inherits from "Schichtleitung Produktion". More under Inheritance.
Orphaned (Verwaist)
Orphaned is a skill or skills profile without an owner, for example because the person left and nobody took the content over. In the Skills Hub the view Orphaned shows such content; whoever uses the skill may take it over first, after a deadline everyone may. At Nordwind, "Lagerlogistik" is orphaned. More under Content without an owner.
Prepared (Vorbereitet)
Prepared is a person an admin brought in via CSV or Entra ID who does not have access yet. The person appears in the directory but cannot sign in until someone chooses Grant access, individually or for a whole Entra group. Lena Berg and Nina Roth are prepared at Nordwind. More under Grant access.
Target (Vorgabe)
The target is the level a skills profile requires for a skill; the interface calls it Target or Required Level. Your level is measured against it, which yields gap and match. A skill in several profiles shows the highest target. More under Skill cards and metrics.
Workflow Lab
The Workflow Lab is a demo canvas for workflow nodes in the workspace. If it is switched on under Workflow Lab in the settings, it appears in the sidebar; the canvas data stays in the browser. More under App settings: Workflow Lab.
Workspace
A workspace is the shared space of an organisation with its own members, roles, apps and private content. A domain workspace is tied to an email domain; a manual workspace is created by a person and only fills through invitations. The switcher in the sidebar shows your workspaces with their plan. More under Workspaces: definition, types, switching.
Blocking access (Zugang sperren)
Under Users there is the tab Blocking Workspace Access. Whoever is listed under Blocked people comes back neither via the company domain nor via an invitation until an admin lifts the block. The block is independent of the join rule. More under Block access.
